Everyone,

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                Friday, September 10, 2010

Comings....

The latest TV sensation?   On Thursday, local educational channel know99 (Cox cable) came and filmed 9th Grade working in the garden as a part of its series about positive stories on education and youth.  Not only will this be wonderful publicity for the school, but we will get footage that we can use as well.  We will let you know when date it will air is set.  Great work, Tony and the 9th Grade!

Also, thanks to everyone who helped over the previous four weekends to bring the garden into shape for its starring role. You are also invited to stop by the DMS garden this month to pick up herbs to enhance your culinary contributions to the coming Community Work Day- see the last item below!

and goings....

Hats off 8th Grade!   Today, all the infant hats that 8th Grade created during their Knit-a-thon fund-raiser were delivered to Maggie's Place to help homeless mothers. Kudos to Jean and all those busy 8th Grade fingers for supporting this good cause!

and renewals...

eScript Reminder: Those of you who have made Desert Marigold the beneficiary of your Safeway Club Card purchases need to renew by November 1st. Already 27 of our 60 "Safeway" families have, but that means 33 more of you need to renew. Thanks for keeping DMS in mind.

Tax Credit Season Starts in September! Next week we will be sending home folders full of information about the TaxCredit Program.  (They'll go home with the oldest DMS student in each household.)  This year, we are asking every family to do their own tax credit plus expand our community by bringing in two more from friends or family members who are Arizona tax payers. Last year this brought in over $30,000 to DMS.

The tax credit program is an incredible opportunity for families to provide substantial financial support to the school at little real cost to themselves.  By directing a certain amount of your tax liability (up to $400 for married couples filing jointly and up to $200 for single filers) to Desert Marigold, you can support field trips, class trips, movement, handwork, woodwork, gardening, music activities and more.  If you have any questions about the tax credit program, please contact the school office.

and "thank you's"....

Thank you to everyone whose financial contributions and hard work made the purchase of 6036 S.28th Street possible. Not only will this be the future home for our growing high school, but it will provide the location of a much needed eurythmy/community gathering space. Anyone interested in seeing the property should plan on attending the October Parent Council meeting, which will be held at the new property.

We are also grateful to our lender, RSF Social Finance, who has agreed to lend 80% of the remodel cost, provided our community can raise the first 20% this fall.   Look for information about this important fundraising effort in the next few weeks.

The first After School Muck Out was a great success - lots of helpers and a few new faces!  After School Muck Out occurs on the first Thursday of every month 1pm - 2:30pm.  Our next muck out will be Thursday October 7.  Thanks to everyone who helps care for our animals.  Volunteers not only clean stalls and the barnyard, but they also feed and bed down the animals each and every day!  There are all kinds of volunteer opportunities in animal care.  Please encourage your children to help with mucking, feeding, and working around our animals.  The rewards are great!  If you would like to be part of animal care at any level, please contact Amy Weibel (Baker) at 602.237.2186 (home) or 602.373.6344 (cell) or acweibel@msn.com.

and lastly....

Our first DMS Community Day of the year is scheduled to coincide with 10:10:10, a day when thousands of groups worldwide will be gathering to take positive action in their own neighborhoods to cut carbon and work toward a sustainable future. Desert Marigold's Community Days are special times throughout the year when we join as a community to work, play and feast together.

Join us at the DMS campus as we take on several exciting projects both on the DMS campus and in the neighborhood, learn more about how to make our campus a greener place, and then share a pot-luck meal based on locally grown food.          Sunday, October 10th    8 a.m. - noon      Put this date aside now!!

Special challenge: Carpool, bus, walk or bike to DMS' 10:10:10: Community Day!

What to bring: Hat, water bottle, work gloves, favorite tools, and a contribution to the pot-luck meal prepared as much as possible with locally grown foods. If you have a solar oven, bring it too!

Projects:

In the garden--

Feed the compost piles to create living soil

Plant garden beds so we can be harvesting local produce all winter

Plant trees along garden pathway and vines on the arbors to provide more shade

Create a path around the garden to the sports field that will showcase desert plants

On campus--

Install a bike rack near the pick-up/drop-off area to support and encourage bikers

Install dog-proof garbage receptacles to keep our grounds safe and beautiful (and to repurpose something currently sitting in our junk pile)

Install solar lights throughout the campus to enhance safety and make use of a renewable resource

Fill the planter on the new deck with herbs and shrubs to add to our edible schoolyard

In the neighborhood--

At 10:10 a.m., the campus gong will sound ten times.  When it does, all hands available will go into the neighborhood and pick up trash along 28th
Street, Vineyard, 26th Street, Lynne Lane, Nancy Lane, and Alta Vista -everywhere!  We will take all filled trash bags to the dumpsters at the
Lynne Lane service entrance, photograph our accomplishment, and then go wash our hands and head over to the potluck.

If you have any questions about DMS' 10:10:10 Community Day, please contact
