Parent Council Meeting at the Future High School - Thursday 7 p.m.

Remember that the meetings for class reps and the Parent Council will be at 6036 S. 28th Street, just north of the school. Please park at the main lot as there is not sufficient space at the house. There will be free child care as usual.

Be sure to remember our 10:10:10 Community Day this Sunday from 8 a.m. to noon!

If you’re in town this weekend, be sure to plan on coming to Desert Marigold’s first Community Day of the year.  . Desert Marigold's Community Days are special times throughout the year when we join as a community to work, play and feast together.  This Sunday’s event is one of thousands of “global work parties”  that will be taking place worldwide on 10/10/10 as a way of taking  positive action in our own neighborhoods to cut carbon and work toward a sustainable future.

Join us at the DMS campus as we take on several exciting projects both on the DMS campus and in the neighborhood, learn more about how to make our campus a greener place, and then share a pot-luck meal based on locally grown food.    Thank you to Dorothy Turner and Tony Robson for organizing the pot-luck, which will feature dishes made from the bounty of our farm, including:

Pumpkin Bread (Chocolate chip and Plain)
Pesto Black Eyed Peas
Deviled Eggs
Pumpkin Cookies
Basil Tea with Melon Balls

Special challenge: Carpool, bus, walk or bike to DMS' 10:10:10: Community Day!

What to bring:

Hat & water bottle

Work gloves & favorite tools

A contribution to the pot-luck meal prepared as much as possible with locally grown food.    If you need herbs such as Basil, Rosemary, or Thyme,  Farmer Tony or one of his apprentices would be delighted to help you pick some this week!

Your own plates, flatware and cups.  This will add to the environmentally conscious theme of this event. Bring whatever you have on hand - chipped plates or odd mismatches will do fine. These items will be used for other DMS gatherings in the future. (We will have some extras on hand if you just can't part with yours.)

If you have a solar oven, bring it too!

Projects:

In the garden--

Feed the compost piles to create living soil

Plant garden beds so we can be harvesting local produce all winter

Plant trees along garden pathway and vines on the arbors to provide more shade

Create a path around the garden to the sports field that will showcase desert plants

On campus--

Install a bike rack near the pick-up/drop-off area to support and encourage bikers

Install dog-proof garbage receptacles to keep our grounds safe and beautiful (and to repurpose something currently sitting in our junk pile)

Install solar lights throughout the campus to enhance safety and make use of a renewable resource

Fill the planter on the new deck with herbs and shrubs to add to our edible schoolyard

And back by popular demand, a surprise painting project organized by Mr. Pawlo.

In the neighborhood--

At 10:10 a.m., the campus gong will sound ten times.  When it does, all hands available will go into the neighborhood and pick up trash along 28th
Street, Vineyard, 26th Street, Lynne Lane, Nancy Lane, and Alta Vista -everywhere!  We will take all filled trash bags to the dumpsters at the
Lynne Lane service entrance, photograph our accomplishment, and then go wash our hands and head over to the potluck.

If you have any questions about DMS' 10:10:10 Community Day, please contact any one of us.  We look forward to seeing you this weekend!
